Presstek's New CTPs Secure 30 Orders In 5 Days
Presstek is introducing two new CTP models for DI presses at Drupa 2004 in association with its press manufacturing partners.
Since the installation, the 46 Karat DI Citygraph has already printed 800,000 copies in 35cm x 50cm format, with an average run of less than 2,000 copies.
As a full-service printer, Citygraph provides a range of print products, from invoices printed in continuous forms, to high-end jobs like letterheads, business cards, menus, leaflets and brochures.
Lorenzo Tadini and his father Gianni, who manage the business together, analysed their company's production process and evaluated the next step in acquiring new technology.
Although its offset press produced high quality jobs, it was not competitive on limited runs.
Increasingly short deadlines were problematic due to the lack of an internal pre-press department.
Initially Gianni and Lorenzo Tadini decided to purchase a CTP to establish the company's in-house pre-press operations.
However, DIgraph, Presstek's distributor in Italy, recommended a system that prompted the Tadinis to make a different purchasing decision - a 46 Karat DI.
A DI is claimed to be designed to cost effectively produce high quality four colour printing in runs from 250 to 10,000.
With a DI all four plates are imaged simultaneously on press in register.
The DI system offers the flexibility needed to meet short deadlines and to cost-effectively handle requests for runs as low as a few hundred copies.
The 46 Karat DI's compact size was also a perfect match for the limited space requirements at Citygraph's production site, said Presstek.
Citygraph installed its new 46 Karat DI following the sale of its conventional four-colour press.
With DIgraph's assistance, the installation was completed in just two days and the machine immediately went in to production.
Lorenzo Tadini said: "It is a lot easier for us to manage a 46 Karat than a pre-press department.
There was no learning curve, as everything is automatic." The 46 Karat DI press has automated set up features, such as colour calibration, that reduce start up time.
The Proflow workflow is optimised and automated to make easy and quick the set up of jobs, added Presstek.
Gianni Tadini is impressed with the infrared dryers, which expedite fast drying times and sheets that are quickly ready for cutting or for a back up.
The processing time for the job is quicker than the company's previous conventional press.
Presstek's DI technology drives the 46 Karat at a claimed 2,540 dots per inch (dpi), providing full support for FM (stochastic), hybrid, and AM (conventional) screening up to 300 lines per inch.
The system simultaneously images the four Profire Digital Media plates on the two drums, without use of chemicals, and with uniform ink distribution.
The output displays flat tint and images that are perfectly registered, added Presstek.
The 46 Karat supports a range of substrates and is said to produces results on PVC and thin polycarbonate.
Gianni Tadini has no regrets that he and his son chose not to invest in CTP and said: "I'm glad that I changed my mind.
The 46 Karat DI is really outstanding - there is no dumping and no adjustments needed to get perfect results." Gianni Tadini founded the company in 1986.
The firm is located in a district with a high concentration of hotels and restaurants and specifically services those markets.
Citygraph initially invested in a conventional offset one-colour press, followed by a four-colour press, a continuous forms press machine, and additional finishing equipment such as a folder and a lamination system.
