Ink Shop, the Scottish retail printing chain, has installed a four-colour Hamada landscape press and a second DPM 2508 polyester platesetter from Presstek Europe.

Ink Shop, the Scottish retail printing chain, has installed a four colour Hamada landscape press and a second DPM 2508 polyester platesetter from Presstek Europe The company, which won the BAPC business of the year award, is planning to open three new outlets in Ayr, Paisley and Lanarkshire during 2006

That will make a total of nine branches, together with a new centralised printing operation in Cumbernauld, which was opened last August.

Stuart Mason, Ink Shop's managing director, said: "We moved the print works out of Glasgow because we needed more space.

The new premises are four times bigger and large enough to house a new eight-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster." And he added: "We estimated that the 70 per cent extra capacity from the eight-colour press, working a double day shift, would give us sufficient capacity but it has quickly been used up." Therefore, with the forthcoming extra workload from the new branches, Ink Shop needed another press.

Mason continued: "We offer a number of products, which are time critical, so we wanted to reduce our delivery times to 48 hours.

The Speedmaster is usually scheduled for two or three days in advance, which makes it difficult if somebody wants some leaflets printed urgently.

Consequently, we approached Presstek Europe, with whom we have a very long established relationship.

Initially we planned to have a two-colour Hamada but there was such a lot of four-colour work, that we changed our minds.

It was a good decision because it's an ideal press for short run quick, turn-round jobs.

One of the products we offer is 5,000 leaflets, printed both sides for GBP99, which is a best seller with our customers." Ink Shop specified the press with an on-line envelope feeder, so that it can produce full colour envelopes for promotions and direct mail.

Mason explained: "As our original DPM 2508 polyester platesetter was working almost 24 hours-a-day, we decided to invest in a second machine to double the capacity and give us back up.

We like to put as much business as possible with Presstek Europe.

The company is a fantastic supplier.

Nothing is too much trouble for and it has certainly helped me to grow my business.".
