Strachan Office Supplies in Glasgow (Scotland) is said to be taking the four colour market by storm following the installation of a four-colour Hamada 52cm B3 landscape press with a DPM 2508 polyester platemaker from Presstek Europe The company traded in an A B Dick 9910 press with a T51 head and an earlier DPM platemaker to invest in equipment that would take it forward to meet customers' demands

Alan Strachan, the managing director of Strachan Office Supplies, said: "Although full colour work only represents 20 per cent of our production, it is a growing area.

We were unable to print it in-house on our other two colour presses because of the time it was taking to achieve the registration we required on two passes.

Consequently we outsourced this type of work, which did not make us very competitive." He added: "We knew that we had to take the plunge sooner or later because more and more of our clients wanted four colour printing on their business stationery, newsletters and leaflets.

We also realised that there was a profitable market, particularly with agency work that we had not yet approached." Having visited an exhibition and looked at what was available, Strachan Office Services went with Presstek.

"The company was able to bundle the press and the platemaker at a very competitive price.

Price was an issue because it was a big step for us.

That said, the equipment is first class and it is supported by Presstek, with whom we have an excellent relationship," Strachan commented.

He added that Strachan has a lot of experience in using polyester plates, so the move to the DPM 2508 was seamless.

The company's new operator was used to running four colour, so with the training that Presstek provided, the installation went very smoothly.

And he continued: "The Hamada is performing very well.

The quality we are getting from the polyester plates is exactly what our customers require.

It's proving very economical because we have run 25,000 copies off of one set of plates.

Although it is still in its early days, we are already bringing in more four colour work and I am sure that we will expand as we continue to promote ourselves.".
