With US$9.0 million in customer commitments and 500 qualified sales leads Presstek has reported that its Ipex 2006 results exceeded the its expectations.

The company took the orders for its 52DI and 34DI presses, as well as its Dimension, Vector TX52 and DPM platesetters, with over 25 per cent of the interest generated for Presstek DI presses.

Ipex built on the company's announcements of two Presstek-branded DI presses, a new generation chemistry-free plate and the opening of its new European business centre.

"The combination of new Presstek products targeted at the printing industry's growth segments and our newly established European organisation brought us great success at Ipex 2006," said Edward J Marino, Presstek's president and chief exeuctive officer.

He added: "We believe that the interest and resulting customer commitments received at the show confirms that we are on track with providing the right products to meet the needs of print service providers.

Presstek's products not only meet the growing demand for high-quality, fast turn-around, cost effective short run colour printing, they also deliver the total solution - from the imaging engine through to consumables, service and support." The Presstek 34DI two-page, four-color DI press is available in two models, which were demonstrated for the first time at Ipex.

Peter Bouchard, Presstek's marketing vice president, commented: "The brisk activity around these presses and the resulting sales orders demonstrate to us that print service providers are looking for a solution that fills the gap between conventional presses and copier-technology.

The DI produces more work in less time than a conventional press and more cost effectively with higher quality than digital copier-technology." Ipex was the first showing of the company's 52DI press, the first Presstek-branded direct imaging press.

This 52cm landscape format machine is said by Presstek to provide a growth opportunity for print providers who want to take advantage of the growing demand for high-quality, fast turn-around, short run four-colour work.

The press is said to be capable of producing 10,000 sheets per hour with a job change-over time of 10 minutes, including imaging.

"There is a growing need for high-quality colour that can be produced quickly and profitably," said Ray Hillhouse, Presstek Europe's sales and marketing director.

Presstek's Spanish distributor MDI, part of the Illasa group, ordered four 52DI presses at the start of the show.

MDI's sales manager Carlos Vilaplana said: "The format of this press is perfect for our market.

We anticipate such a great demand for this press in Europe that we wanted to place orders to get the first deliveries of these presses.

This press will open new doors for us and our customers." Presstek said that the Anthem Pro chemistry-free, thermally imaged plate is the latest addition to Presstek's portfolio of plates and is said to optimise the advantages and proven capabilities of a grained anodised surface and requires only a water rinse after imaging to prepare the plate for printing.

In combination with Presstek's Dimension series of thermal platesetters, Anthem Pro is claimed to provide a streamlined workflow, with high quality printed results, whilst supporting run lengths up to 100,000 impressions.

Quen Baum, Presstek's European managing director, commented: "The sales of Dimension Excel chemistry-free CTP systems at Ipex brings an excellent opportunity for the new Anthem Pro plate to demonstrate the highest level of simplicity and quality in the CTP arena." And Edward J Marino added: "Europe is a great market opportunity for Presstek.

We believe that our products and services will bring great value to this market and the results from Ipex seem to indicate that the market agrees with us.

We look forward to the continued growth of our presence in Europe and to the growing success of the companies who have purchased from us at Ipex.".
