Presstek has installed the first 52DI digital offset press at Absolute Digital in Kendal, Cumbria (UK).

Presstek has installed the first 52DI digital offset press at Absolute Digital in Kendal, Cumbria (UK) The Presstek 52DI, which was launched at Ipex for the European market, is an automated 52cm landscape sheet fed four-colour digital offset printing press that is said to combine the efficiency of an all digital workflow with the versatility and quality of a conventional waterless press

Jon Wallbank, a director of Absolute Digital, said: "It was a natural progression for us to upgrade from the earlier generation Karat 46 portrait format DI press to the 52DI press.

Although the landscape format is more versatile - for example, we can now print A4 folders flat - it was the increased speed and improved quality of the new press that are the most exciting new developments." The press utilises Presstek Profire Excel 16micron laser imaging and Profire Digital Media, which is claimed to provide 300 lines per inch (lpi) and FM-stochastic quality printing.

It can print up to 10,000 impressions an hour whilst printing up to 300lpi or FM screening, added Presstek.

It also automatically adjusts the amounts of ink according to the image on each plate so that run up to colour can be achieved in only 30 copies.

Wallbank explained: "We are totally committed to Presstek's DI technology because it has opened up a new market for us over the last two years, which now accounts for over a third of our business.

We saw the market changing about three years ago and the constraints that short run colour was putting on litho.

It just wasn't profitable enough.

However, it quickly became clear that our customers wanted much more from us in terms of quality and run lengths up to tens of thousands of copies, which was why we decided to buy our first direct imaging press." And he continued: "We thought that we were producing superb quality on the Karat 46.

It certainly won us the prestigious contract to print Reebok UK's flagship footwear and apparel catalogues.

We are now producing even better quality since we installed the 52DI only a week ago.

The installation was perfect and we were in production very quickly, which is what we have grown to expect from Presstek, whose service we cannot fault.

Our clients want the best quality, which is why we have decided to standardise on 300lpi screens or FM.

The photographic quality is fantastic.

We are very optimistic that it will help to expand our business even faster.".
