Presstek has installed an A B Dick brand DPM 2508 polyester platesetter and Hamada B452AI MKII four colour press within the Design and Print Unit of Birmingham City Council in the UK.

Presstek has installed an A B Dick brand DPM 2508 polyester platesetter and Hamada B452AI MKII four colour press within the Design and Print Unit of Birmingham City Council in the UK Tom Cole, print operations manager at the Design and Print Unit, said: "Like most printers today, we are faced with an increasing demand for faster turn-round and higher quality on four colour printing, which now accounts for an increasing proportion of our work." The Design and Print Unit, which also prints for other public sector clients, as well as charitably funded organisations, is now able to deliver higher quality four colour print and graphic work in-house, said Presstek

Cole explained: "Although we are a local government in-house operation, the Design and Print Unit is run strictly on a commercial basis.

Not only did we have to turn the work round faster, we had to become more competitive and the only way to do this was to bring the whole process from design, to print, to delivery in-house.

We are now able, in the majority of cases, to meet or exceed all our clients' expectations." And he continued: "We are now able to proof, make plates and get a job on press in the same day, whereas previously this couldn't even be contemplated.

In addition to this we expect to reduce our external printing costs by up to 10 per cent." Presstek said it won the tender for the four colour press and the DPM 2508 platesetter on price and quality.

Cole pointed out: "We took some typical process colour jobs for Presstek to produce at its showroom.

We also took up references with one of its customers.

We felt confident in awarding the tender to Presstek because we already had a good relationship with the company and were happy with the quality of its service and training.

This was important because the introduction of a computer-to-plate system was completely new to us." And he explained: "Initial results have been very positive and we are already retaining more business in-house.

We can get a job proofed, the plates made, put on press and printed the same day.

If we have any plate changes, we can do them straight away, without having to wait for an outside repro house.

The set-up time on press is very quick and easy and we've been delighted with the quality of the polyester plates." The new press has automatic plate ejection, as well as improved feed and delivery systems for faster productivity.

Cole concluded: "We can run jobs two-up, which we could never do before.

What is really encouraging is the amount of money we are saving.

The plate costs are significantly lower than what they previously were and this makes us so much more competitive on runs up to 50,000.".
