After a Dimension platesetter was destroyed in a fire last year, Akros Print in Glasgow (Scotland) has installed a second Dimension425 Excel platesetter.

Presstek supplied both Dimension platesetters, as well as the Compose workflow system with Star Proof and an Epson printer for proofing at the digital offset printing firm It was the Dimension system's environmental credentials that set it apart from the competition and, according to Akros Print's managing director, Jim Wright: "It was the only platesetter that did not use chemistry, which has so many advantages

It's important from a health and safety perspective because we don't have to buy and dispose of chemicals.

At the same time, some of our customers are very environmentally aware and it is a good selling tool." Akros Print bought the first Dimension platesetter when it installed a two-colour Heidelberg Speedmaster press.

The second Dimension produces plates for a new Komori four-colour press as well.

Jim Wright explained: "We had no hesitation in specifying the same machine.

In the past, we have always bought second hand equipment but when my father retired and my brother and I took over the business, we decided to upgrade with new pre-press, press and finishing equipment.

The consequence has been a significant increase in sales, despite the set back last year." Wright, whose background is in pre-press, realised that the company needed to invest in a computer-to-plate system to increase plate production.

Prior to that it was using a film setter and making metal plates conventionally.

He commented: "One of our strengths is that we handle a large volume of work from small to medium size clients rather than from a few major clients.

This in turn, means that we have to move a lot of jobs on and off press every day, so we needed a platesetter, which not only gave us the quality and reliability but fast make-ready and consistency on press.

I particularly wanted a metal plate system but until recently, they have been prohibitively expensive." And he added: "We've recently changed to Anthem Pro plates, which has speeded up the drying process because they have less water content.

We've been very pleased with the way that Presstek has supported us throughout all our difficulties.

With its help we have turned a negative in to a positive.

We now have much larger 5,000 square foot premises, the latest Dimension425 Excel with the new Profire laser technology, which complements our new presses with excellent quality.

Our customers have been very supportive too and we are going from strength to strength.".
