Small format print jobs delivered with quality and speed are now possible following the commissioning of a Presstek 52DI press at Tipolito Teco.

The 52DI digital offset press has been installed at Tipolito Teco's factory in Brescia (Italy) The press is already providing a return on investment in terms of increased turnover and the ability to handle a greater customer base, according to Presstek

Guido Lovato, owner of Tipolito Teco, said: "We are receiving very positive feedback from our customers as they have definitely noticed the increase in quality." The 52DI, which was introduced last year at Grafitalia in Italy, is an automated 52cm landscape sheetfed four-colour digital offset printing press.

It is claimed to combine the efficiency of an all digital workflow with the versatility and quality of a conventional press.

As a direct imaging press, it eliminates the need for a CTP platesetter and processor.

The 52DI handles a range of substrates, a maximum sheet size of 520mm x 360mm and can produce up 10,000 sheets per hour, it is claimed.

Tipolito Teco has been trading for the past 80 years and has been improving the quality and range of its print services by adopting the latest technology, added Presstek.

Guido Lovato is the third generation of the family business and he takes an innovative approach to growing the company and investing in leading edge pre-press equipment.

That strategy prompted Lovato to create an in-house graphics department in 1983 and to acquire a Presstek CTP system in 2003.

The CTP equipment increased productivity but the presses could not keep pace with the increasing volume of fast turn-around jobs.

Lovato explained :"We were satisfied with the quality of the Presstek CTP system and have established an internal pre-press process, which accelerated our production capabilities.

However, we could not satisfy our customer requests for immediate job delivery and we lacked the physical space in our small facility to include another press." The company has the advantage of being the only print shop in the business district of the city, which has enabled Tipolito Teco to build lasting relationships with companies and creative agencies in the area.

It produces a variety of print jobs, such as business cards, brochures, manuals and newsletters, with a varying run length of 300 to 15,000 copies.

Some of Tipolito Teco's 800 customers are companies from every region in Italy, along with an increasing number of clients in France, Spain, Mexico and Israel.

Guido Lovato said he knew that acquiring a new press could enable the company to effectively handle a higher volume of business but space limitations made it seemingly impossible to acquire another press.

However, Digraph, Presstek's Italian distributor, recommended the 52DI press and it proved to be the perfect match for Tipolito Teco's growth strategy, said the company.

Lovato commented: "I was happy to let Digraph advise me because we have an excellent relationship with the company and I am very satisfied with ist service." The technology and the compact size of the 52DI press convinced Lovato and the machine was installed in January.

The existing two-colour press and CTP system have been sold and all new work is being handled on the Presstek 52DI.

Lovato further commented: "Within one week after the installation we were already in full production.

We switched from CTP to handling our pre-press and press management with the 52DI and we had practically no disruption.

Now we can manage 15 different jobs in a single day, including same day service and our customers are amazed." The Presstek 52DI utilises Profire Excel 16 micron laser imaging technology and Profire Digital Media to produce work at 120 lines per centimetre (300 lines per inch and FM-stochastic printing.

In addition, the press automatically adjusts the amount of ink according to the image on each plate.

The result is a printed sheet and a make-ready time claimed to be faster than any other offset printing process.

Tipolito Teco is promoting its expanded production capabilities and it launched a direct mail campaign targeting companies in and around Brescia.

Another potential source of new work are print shops that lack the technical capability to handle colour jobs and need to outsource the work to Tipolito Teco.
