The Presstek 52DI digital offset press has received the best innovative technology award during Printshow, a print and packaging exhibition in Bucharest (Romania).

Printshow provided the venue for the Presstek 52DI press's debut in Romania.

Prosystem Print, Presstek's distributor in Romania, has said that the DI press demonstrations during Printshow were well received by visitors.

Karoly Racz, managing director of Prosystem Print, said: "The Presstek 52DI generated an exceptional level of interest from people and they were impressed by its print quality, speed and ease-of-use.

The award has also drawn greater awareness to the advantages of DI and Presstek's digital systems for automating print production." Presstek commented that an increasing number of eastern European printers are exploring how to cost-effectively integrate chemistry-free production, whilst boosting productivity and print quality.

The company added that Romanian printers were attracted to the Presstek 52DI's environmentally-friendly, efficient and ease of operation.

Presstek claimed that its DI presses offer chemistry-free platemaking, waterless printing and create less waste than conventional printing processes.

Specifically, the DI's ability to go from file to sellable colour within 20 sheets reduces paper waste.

Stan Najmr, DI director of Presstek Europe, said that the company is making strong inroads in the Russian, Romanian and Polish markets.

he explained: "Customers appreciate Presstek's portfolio of environmentally-friendly digital systems because there is no trade-off in ease of use or quality.

The Presstek 52DI, a fully automated B3 press, delivers top print quality and very high productivity." He added: "For example, one customer in Poland, Takt, printed one million impressions in the first four weeks after the delivery of itsnew digital offset press.

DI users are reaping benefits in terms of profits, as well as increased productivity." Based on his observations during Printshow in Bucharest, Najmr believes that Presstek is well positioned to grow its DI business, as well as capture greater CTP market share.

He said: "Our new Dimension450 Excel-AL received lot of attention from owners of conventional presses.

Our CTP systems provide the reliability, versatility, speed and quality that printers need, especially mid-size and smaller shops, whilst automating key steps and eliminating time-consuming pre-press procedures." During Printshow, Presstek's distributor fielded a number of queries from printers about how DI could increase their overall productivity and profitability, added the company.

Presstek also emphaises that according to PIA/GATF estimates, the cost of paper accounts for 22 per cent of a printer's sales revenues.

Therefore, implementing DI production has a direct correlation to profitability.

The company believes that in general, job profitability is 13 per cent higher on a DI press compared to a conventional machine and compared to a toner-based digital device, a DI press saves 50 per cent, on average, per letter-size page.

Presstek claimed that its 52DI press provides printing of up to 10,000 impressions per hour at 300 lines per inch (lpi) and supports FM screening without incurring additional time or expense.

Make-ready is accomplished in approximately 10 minutes, including plate imaging and coming up to colour within about 20 sheets.

The waterless technology of the landscape format 52DI press, in addition to the 2:1 roll out ratio of the 52DI's ink train, provide ink coverage and the ability to print solids more easily.

The 52DI's landscape orientation and 52cm design (520mm x 375mm or 20.47" x 14.76" sheet size) supports efficient sheet utilization and addresses a range of applications, added the company.
