DI Digital Offset Press Expands Printing Capacity
City Colors, a printer offering services to the trade, experienced such immediate value from its Presstek 52DI digital offset press that the company quickly installed a second new Presstek system.
Hallau Printers was a small, traditional print shop when Max Weber, the company's general manager, became head of operations in 2002.
Presstek said that Weber recognised that a number of technological changes needed to be made.
With 10 employees Hallau Printers needed to produce the tri-weekly newspaper with a circulation of 2,500 copies, whilst also meeting the requests of other customers for such advertising material as colour flyers, that required flexible print runs, which were usually outsourced by the company.

Presstek will be featuring its portfolio of digital offset printing systems from March 2 - 4 at The Graphics of the Americas trade show in Miami, Florida (USA).
Weber's research indicated that the best solution was a DI digital offset press, as Weber explained: "When we invest in something new, we go all the way.
We didn't want to take any intermediate steps as our goal was to modernise our machines to reflect the state of the art.
We chose the Presstek 52DI because we wanted to produce our newspaper in-house again, from the editorial work all the way to printing." Once production has been completely moved to the Presstek 52DI, Hallau Printers will gradually phase out conventional offset printing.
In a relatively short period of time, the Presstek 52DI is proving to be a solid investment, saving time as well as money, said the company.
Max Weber commented: "It's a good feeling not to have to outsource work anymore, as today we can easily handle the most demanding short-run jobs in-house.
Our newspaper production is more streamlined too as we can print some pages the day before and make the entire process more flexible.
This investment enables us to enhance our competitiveness and our flexibility." The Presstek 52DI digital offset press is claimed to offer traditional offset and digital printers the most profitable system for meeting the demand for quick turn-around, short-run high quality colour printing.
The 52cm press is said to print up to 10,000 B3 pages per hour with a maximum print area of 510mm x 360mm per sheet, which Presstek said is one of the largest print areas available in its class.
The press's automated sheetfed operation combines the efficiency of an all-digital workflow with the versatility and quality of a conventional offset press, said Presstek.
The small footprint and easy operation make the Presstek 52DI suitable for shops like Hallau Printers that have limited space for new equipment and a small production team.
