The alleged infringement of Presstek's patent and trademark rights has prompted it to file a complaint with the International Trade Commission against printing plate manufacturer VIM Technologies.

The complaint is also levelled against VIM Technologies' manufacturing partner Hanita Coatings RCA.

Presstek said it has also sued three distributors of VIM products in the USA - Guaranteed Service and Supplies, Ohio Graphco and Recognition Systems, as well as one Canadian distributor, Atece Canada.

The company added that it is also seeking an order from the ITC forbidding the importation and sale of the VIM printing plates in the USA, which would be enforced at all US borders by the US Customs Service.

Presstek commented that its ITC complaint alleges that VIM's Di-R Waterless Processless Thermal Plate Rolls infringe Presstek's US Patent numbers 5,339,737 and 5,487,338, whilst it also claims that VIM is infringing Presstek's Federally registered DI trademark, which it has held since 1992.

Presstek's president and chief executive officer, said: "Our intellectual property is a valuable company asset and we will continue to take legal action to protect our rights.

We will enforce our rights against VIM and its distributors, not only in North America, but in Europe and other parts of the world as well.".
