Precisia LLC, a leading developer of advanced printed electronics technologies, announces its partnership with Thin Battery Technology (TBT) of Cleveland, Ohio, to more efficiently capture the rapidly expanding market for ultra-thin batteries.
Applied with a pressure-sensitive label, printed batteries can be used discreetly to enhance products with flat, rectangular surfaces, such as game boards and greeting cards.
Their flexibility makes them easier to apply to bendable substrates such as labels, folding cartons and thin cards.
Printed batteries also withstand the stresses and flexing of continued product use, a distinct advantage over rigid button batteries.
The partnership combines the battery design facilities of TBT with the high-speed printing, advanced ink and electronics capabilities of Precisia.
At less than one millimeter thick, ultra-thin batteries are ideal for smart labels, radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and active packaging applications that require an external power source.
They serve as a replacement for button batteries in such diverse applications as greeting cards, cereal box giveaways, printed board games, point-of-purchase displays and credit cards.
"Our strategy of developing applications for ultra-thin batteries utilising our high-speed printing technologies and advanced printed components will provide customers with an affordable product that is thinner and flexible," said Jim Rohrkemper, president of Precisia.
Using the combined laboratory resources of both companies, TBT and Precisia are developing a number of battery configurations that offer end-users the freedom to place the battery in different points of contact on a powered device.
Both Precisia and TBT are members of the Smart Active Labels (SAL) Consortium, an international interest group of industry leaders dedicated to promoting and developing the use of smart active labels.
Precisia sits on the SAL Consortium's standards committee for materials.
Precisia LLC is a separate business unit of Flint Ink Corporation, the world's largest privately owned ink manufacturer, and provides conductive and advanced printing inks and electronics technology and processes.
Precisia's products include materials for radio frequency identification (RFID) and other printed electronics applications, including smart and active packaging and labelling, printed electronics, lighting and displays.
Thin Battery Technologies is a North American owned producer of proprietary.
