When Himmer Druck installed a fleet of new printing machinery it was crucial to ensure that it would consume less energy whilst, still increasing performance and raising productivity As part of its large equipment-purchasing initiative, Himmer invested in a four-colour Roland 900, in XXL format 7 (maximum sheet format 1,129mm x 1,620mm), and a four-colour Roland 900 in XXL format 8 (maximum sheet format 1,300mm x 1,850mm)

To realise low energy and service costs with a new Arkle Print has installed a PIAB Vacuum and Blow System (PVBS).
Vacuum and Blow System Improves Paper Handling
PIAB, is offering its PIAB Vacuum and Blow System (PVBS) for improved paper handling efficiency and print quality in the graphics industry.
The company also purchased a two-colour and a five-colour Roland 700 with perfector (maximum sheet format 740mm x 1,040mm).
The press uses hybrid equipment for in-line processing of covers.
Although the Roland machinery is extremely well-respected in the industry, according to PIAB, it is only effective if operating continuously without shutting down unexpectedly due to problems with auxiliary equipment, such as paper handling equipment.

Vacuum Pumps For Magazine Binding Cut Downtime
For over 30 years, French company Brofasud has specialised in magazine binding for the print media industry.
"Well controlled paper handling minimises the risk of operational stoppages involving the facility's entire vacuum system," said Hannes Eisele, Himmer's president.
Understanding the importance of consistent machine operation, shorter make-ready time and higher printing speeds, Himmer made it a priority to invest in an effective paper handling system.
After exploring several options, Himmer decided upon the Vacuum and Blow System (PVBS) from PIAB.
The driving force behind PVBS is a compressor that can be placed in another room close to the printing system.
A pipe system is then run from the compressor to the actual printing room, where the PVBS and the small efficient vacuum pumps are placed.
Unlike alternative vacuum products, each PVBS pump operates only when being used, whilst all other pumps remain at a standstill.
The result is low compressed air consumption.
Himmer was also impressed by the ability of the PVBS to operate at low heat and noise levels, said PIAB.
"Printing rooms are often hot and noisy, making them a less than desirable place to work in for employees.
The heat also has a negative effect on the handling of paper.
The compressed-air technology that the PVBS uses provides a cooling effect, which together with the low noise level creates a more pleasant working environment," said a Himmer representative.
Himmer installed one PIAB Vacuum and Blow System on each of its new Roland machines.
Each system consists of four main components - vacuum and blowpumps, a cabinet, computer software and hand-held remote controls.
Himmer's operator can set the exact level for suction and blowing and all functions can be controlled individually from a central control unit, or by remote control.
One of the additional benefits of the PIAB Vacuum and Blow system is also claimed to be its flexibility and ease-of-use.
"The settings for different types of paper are stored in the computer so they can be extracted when it is time to reprint or perform a similar task," said Markus Fischer, managing director at Himmer.
Additionally, the opportunity to use software to control the pumps provided Himmer with maximum control and precision.
The PVBS cabinet also includes a manual emergency control unit to prevent accidents.
Since the PIAB Vacuum and Blow systems have been installed, Himmer has been able to offer new possibilities in the production of books, catalogues and magazines.
For example, the company can now produce 64 A4 pages out of one single sheet.
In the post-press process the 64-page sheet offers the advantage of direct preparation of the sheets in format 8.
That results in a further increase in speed and fewer stapling stations are needed.
Fischer added: "PIAB vacuum and blow pumps have significantly improved our productivity.
The small, compact and easily installed pumps have no moving parts, which lowers the sound level and makes the pumps basically maintenance-free." The success with the Vacuum and Blow Systems has resulted in future business and Fischer predicts a long-lasting partnership.
"We will be installing a five-colour Roalnd 900 in XXL format 8 to further strengthen our fleet," commented Fischer.
PIAB's Vacuum and Blow system gave us the confidence we needed to know that our machines would run smoothly, without sudden stoppages due to the paper getting scratched or stuck together.
There is no need to stop and create new print settings, which increases our productivity, added the company.
