Sustainable Print Not Just
Environmentally Sound
Sustainable printing must extend beyond environmental concerns and focus on three areas of sustainability - people, profits and the planet.
That is according to The Sustainable Green Printing (SGP) Partnership in a message from the first stakeholders meeting of the group, of which the Printing Industries of America and Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF) is a collaborator along with the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) and the Flexographic Technical Association (FTA) During the meeting, it was agreed by all members of the stakeholders group that the focus of sustainable printing would have to focus on all three important concepts of sustainability, or the triple bottom line

Conference Helps Firms Adopt Variable Data Print
PIA/GATF's Variable Data and Personalisation Conference from November 4 - 6 in Phoenix, Arizona (USA) will feature an expanded array of topics.
The meeting also resulted in a schedule of development, including a second stakeholders meeting in January, 2008 and plans to launch the SGP registry at the National Environmental, Health and Safety Conference in Indianapolis from March 10 - 12, 2008.
The SGP meeting was aiming to take the first steps towards a national registry programme for green and sustainable printing practices in the USA.
The SGP Partnership was formed in June with the primary goals of defining sustainable green printing and identifying steps that help the printing industry establish sustainable (or 'green') manufacturing and business practices that are more environmentally sustainable.
Gary Jones, the director of environmental health and safety affairs for PIA/GATF, said: "In addition to the three trade associations, representatives from the US Environmental Protection Agency, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Audubon International, Greentrack Strategies and printers representing different print sectors all came together to assist printers with the overwhelming demand being placed upon them by customers, investment firms and environmental groups to become more sustainable and green.
The dedication by all parties to the accomplishment of such an important task was quite impressive.".
