Letter, 'large letter' and 'packet' are the three size formats that will be introduced by Royal Mail with the launch of Pricing in Proportion (PiP) during August in the UK.

Letter, 'large letter' and 'packet' are the three size formats that will be introduced by Royal Mail with the launch of Pricing in Proportion (PiP) during August in the UK.

With the introduction of PiP mail will no longer be rated on class of service and weight alone - the format to which it belongs will also determine the price.

With that in mind, Pitney Bowes has launched Dimensions-on-the-Way (D-o-W) technology, that is claimed to enable businesses to improve mailroom productivity and reduce costs.

D-o-W is said to provide the ability to automatically assess which format a mailpiece belongs to as the mail is processed by the franking machine.

Pitney Bowes added that it pioneered automatic mail processing with Weigh-on-the-Way (W-o-W) technology, which enabled machines weigh the mailpiece as it passes through the franking machine before applying the correct postage.

Dimensions-on-the-Way (D-o-W) automatically assesses the length, width and thickness of a mailpiece to determine which PiP format it belongs to.

This removes the requirement to manually check mailpieces against a size and thickness template when processing mail.

The combination of W-o-W plus D-o-W from Pitney Bowes is said to provide automatic processing of mixed weight, mixed size and mixed thickness mail, with the correct postage applied automatically.

W-o-W and D-o-W is only available from Pitney Bowes with the technology embedded within its DM825, DM875, DM925 and DM1000 digital mailing systems.

Dan Hindman, vice president of sales and marketing at Pitney Bowes, said: "We have made a large investment in developing technology that will automatically assess and accurately price mail according to its format.

DoW will help mailrooms to remain efficient, but customers should also look to save postage by re-designing their large letter pieces to fit within the letter specification and taking advantage of the 100 gram first weight break.".
