Stevens Graphics, the third-largest directory printer in the USA, has installed the first Prism-QTMS iQ system in the country.

Stevens Graphics, the third-largest directory printer in the USA, has installed the first Prism QTMS iQ system in the country QTMS iQ is the newest version of the Prism's print management system, comprising monitoring modules and custom-developed sensors that automatically record and collate shop-floor information and statistics

With plants in Atlanta and Birmingham, Stevens Graphics produces directories and catalogues for Bell South and other publishers.

Replacing older installations on web presses, QTMS iQ systems are now installed on all of the company's production equipment in both plants, which includes six web presses, one sheetfed press and three binders.

Christopher Mark, manager of IT at Stevens Graphics, said there were several factors influencing the decision to choose QTMS iQ over the other systems that were evaluated.

He explained: "First, it is natively integrated with our Prism-WIN MIS system.

It's the only system designed to handle new state-of-the art web presses with three reel stands.

Also important for us is the capability for pallet tracking between the web presses and the binder." He added: "It's an advanced, sophisticated system and we're able to install it on any piece of equipment.

The fact that accurate, immediate production information is available on-line, in real-time through Prism-WIN to any person in our organisation is a real plus.

Prism's support is excellent, as it always has been." Leland Morgan, general manager, Prism-USA Holdings, said: "Stevens Graphics' decision to install the QTMS iQ system reflects their confidence in our organisation, our technology and our commitment to keep them on the leading edge of advanced print business management systems." The machine-installed sensors of QTMS iQ are said to enable real-time job tracking to help cut waste, lower make-ready times and improve operating procedures.

QTMS iQ provides accurate counting to eliminate costly job over-runs or under-runs, helps manage control of pallets and improves management of customer delivery times.

QTMS iQ includes several new features.

They include new XML browser-based tools for managing operations from press and bindery to finished goods.

New pallet-tracking modules use wireless LAN and TCP/IP technology to provide a complete view of every pallet for each section of a job.

QTMS iQ is developed via VB.NET and runs inside the .NET framework.

It uses native XML support to pass information between the central data system and individual machines.

QTMS iQ works with presses, reel stands, stackers, stitchers, binders and finishing lines from any manufacturer.
