Pantone has introduced new editions of its Matching System graphics publications, including the flagship Pantone formula guide.

Pantone has introduced new editions of its Matching System graphics publications, including the flagship Pantone formula guide.

Reflecting the general market trend established over the past decade, the new coated paper used in the formula guide and chips books is brighter and whiter.

The company said the trend has been driven by a combination of factors.

Designers have gained more influence over the paper that is specified for use on jobs and prices for premium grades of paper have fallen within a cost-effective range.

The competitive dynamics associated with globalisation and consolidation within the paper manufacturing industry has also had an influence.

In addition, coated paper is now provided in an 80lb cover weight for improved durability and performance over the previous 60lb cover stock.

The new matte paper is also brighter and whiter, with a flatter finish than previous editions for greater differentiation from the coated paper.

"Listening to our customers has always been paramount at Pantone," explained Richard Herbert, Pantone's president.

"Our decision to move to a brighter, whiter paper was influenced by the evolving preferences of our designer customers.

We also upgraded to a heavier, smoother paper for greater durability and a better feel, and made our matte paper flatter in response to our European customers.".
