A newly-formed partnership to bring buyers and sellers of print together, is backing a bid to create a major centre for digital printing.

Print Yorkshire, a partnership between Yorkshire Forward and the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) is supporting an application from Leeds University to create a centre for industrial collaboration in digital printing.

Project director for Print Yorkshire, Mike Hopkins, commented: "The centre aims to help print-related SMEs to improve their competitiveness - which is a key objective for Print Yorkshire, so we are delighted to support it.

The project aims to bring our region's abundant academic expertise together with the technological and business strengths of the print industry across Yorkshire and the Humber, to assist in expanding product range, increasing production efficiency and reducing waste." Print Yorkshire, which is supported with funding from Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional Development Fund, aims to share best practice, encourage training and development and enhance networking opportunities, to create the most productive and profitable print sector in the UK.

Already a major national player, the print industry in Yorkshire makes a substantial £1.35 billion annual contribution to the region's economy and provides direct employment for nearly 20,000 people.
