Showcase2006, hosted by Printyorkshire, saw international leaders in the industry address critical issues, such as the threat of the internet, as well as the environment and waste management.

The UK print and packaging buyers' conference, coupled with an exhibition of the UK region's printing companies, brought together speakers from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean and leading brands, including Hallmark, Npower, Tangent Communications and The Environment Agency.

Sixty Yorkshire-based print and packaging companies had the opportunity of exhibiting their capabilities to buyers - with over 500 delegates from the UK and internationally.

Lisa Palillo from the international brand, Hallmark Cards, revealed the truth about the threat to the printing industry posed by the internet, and how it is affecting Hallmark.

Palillo said: "At Hallmark we are using the web to our best advantage and investigating its many uses and possibilities but ultimately, our focus will remain on our core business.

There is something special about a hand written note or card and this is something that technology and more specifically the internet can never replace." The event gathered major figures within the print and packaging industry, including Jeff Richards from Npower, Michael Hallinan, the strategic procurement manager for Northern Foods, English Heritage's Elaine Pooke, Dawn Fitzgerald, the corporate designer at The Environment Agency and US printing industry commentator, Margie Gallo Dana.

Robert McClements, the chief executive of Print Yorkshire, said: "This year Showcase came of age it was exciting to be hosting delegates from Holland, Germany, the USA and Ireland.

With over 500 attendees from across the UK print and related industries the atmosphere in the exhibition was buzzing all day.".
