Young people from the South Yorkshire region of the UK have been encouraged to get in to printing with an initiative supported by print firms across the county.

Young people from the South Yorkshire region of the UK have been encouraged to get in to printing with an initiative supported by print firms across the county.

The first youngsters to complete The Prince's Trust Get in to Printing programme, established through Printyorkshire, have received their certificates at a ceremony at Thomas Rotherham College.

The college, which managed the programme on behalf of The Prince's Trust, worked with Sheffield Futures, Yorkshire Forward and South Yorkshire Learning and Skills Council, to devise and provide the course, which saw seven young people between the ages of 18 and 25, receive work experience with local print firms.

Those firms included Polestar, Loxley's, Pinders, Garnett Dickinson and Horner Brothers.

Chief executive at Printyorkshire, Robert McClements, said: "We were delighted to help the Prince's Trust with this initiative.

Get in to Printing is a chance for young people to see what is a very dynamic and growing industry, develop their skills and enthusiasm for a career in the sector." Clare Sewell, programme manager for The Prince's Trust added: "Get in to Printing with The Prince's Trust is a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain practical experience of the print industry and to gain access to job opportunities in the sector.

The programme will also provide young people with the opportunity to gain a health and safety qualification, develop their CVs and interview technique and gain support from a Prince's Trust development worker for up to six months." One Get in to Printing student, Daniel from Rotherham, said: "I had never thought about a career in printing before but really wanted the opportunity to try something new.

The course was excellent and has given me a real insight in to the industry and will hopefully lead me to gain work in this area." The trust provided funding for the scheme for education with additional funding from South Yorkshire Learning and Skills Council.

Trust for Education Administrator, Trevor Nuttall, commented: "We saw this as a great opportunity for young people in this region to really get in to the printing industry and find out what it has to offer.

The partnership between Printyorkshire, The Prince's Trust, Thomas Rotherham College and Sheffield Futures appears to have achieved that aim and demonstrates how working together we can really benefit both industry and young people.".
