Four young people left the headquarters of the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) each with a cheque for £2,500 to help fund their education, training and careers in printing and the graphic arts.
The four were the 2004 winners in the first year of the BPIF Educational Scholarships, a scheme that is an initiative from the Printers' Charitable Corporation (PCC) and funded by the BPIF Benevolent Fund.
Four awards were made this inaugural year, 12 will be made in 2005 and it is estimated the scholarships can be funded for at least the next 12 years at an average of eight per year.
At a lunchtime ceremony the young winners received the congratulations of BPIF chief executive Michael Johnson and PCC president Sir Jeremy Elwes.
The winners were included Ulrike Fischer (26) who is studying an MA Publishing (Production) at the London College of Printing.
She already has an MA Hons in English and German from the University of Aberdeen and is interested in educational publishing and the production of school and university books.
She will spend her award on a field trip to Russia, supporting her rent and living costs for the next years of her studies and the purchase of a laptop.
Darren Ammar (18) is studying for an Art and Design Foundation Diploma at the University of Hertfordshire.
He receives no student loan and will use his award to allow him to complete his studies by helping his parents with the fees and by purchasing an Apple Mac essential for someone bent on a design career.
Jenny Keeble (22) is employed in the production department of Guardian Newspapers and studying on-line at the LCP for a Foundation Degree in Printing and Publishing (Production).
She is in her second year and the award will allow Jenny to continue her studies into a BA in Print Management, to purchase a notebook computer, the necessary software and a selection of vital reading material.
Owen Pawsey (20) is a finishing operative at Denny Bros, Bury St Edmunds (UK) having started as an apprentice in 2000.
He operates a variety of machinery including folding and gluing and specialist Fix-a-Form converting machines.
Knowing that he had gained an award he has just seized the opportunity to go on a study tour to the USA to visit an associate of his present company to see first hand how an American company operates in a similar sector.
