Polestar Wheatons has claimed it is the first UK company to order a Timson Z48A ZMR web press.

Due to be installed in April 2005, it will join a range of sheet-fed, web offset and digital presses at the company, as well as the new Muller Martini Bolero Binder, which is currently being commissioned and is also believed to be the first of its kind in the UK.

The Timson Z48A ZMR press was launched at Print 2001 in Chicago and is seen as a natural extension to the Timson T48A range of book presses.

With its twin print units and vertical web line there is no need to stop for plate changing on single colour work.

Plates on one unit can be changed while the other unit continues to print.

The short web lead between units makes the press ideal for producing two-colour books claimed Polestar.

Although it is necessary to stop the press for a make-ready, the Timson semi-automatic plate changing system keeps downtime to a minimum.

Featuring the Timson combination folder, the 'three sides open' signature completely eliminates creasing in the head of the A4 copy and produces an accurately folded signature with excellent lay flat characteristics.

This latest investment for Polestar Wheatons, the academic, directory and catalogue arm of the Polestar Group, builds on the recent expansion of its CTP and binding technology, as Bob Brown, managing director, explained.

"With the first installations in the UK of this new Timson press and our new binder, we are investing in and bringing on line a new era of technology for our customers, and we will have the very best web printing and limp binding facilities the industry can offer.

We have specifically chosen this state-of-the-art purpose-built printing press with the needs and demands of our current and potential customers in mind," he said.

The ability to produce 48-page A4 and A5 two-colour sections, the semi-automatic plate changing and the reduction in paper wastage all contribute favourably to customers' schedules and costs, and as a result offer an attractive production proposition, continued Brown.

Polestar Wheatons has benefited from a steady investment programme over the last two years, which began with the installation of two CTP systems in 2002.

Those were joined this year by a further system and complemented in press and bindery production by a new Nexpress in 2003 and the Bolero binder.
