Polestar Direct Leeds (UK) is to retain its web printing business in Leeds following the completion of negotiations with its employees and the GPMU about the potential closure of the whole site.

Its sheet-fed business, including finishing, will close and redundancy terms for a number of employees are currently being agreed.

Geoff Mordt, managing director of Polestar Direct, said: "The web market and the type of work we produce on our presses ensure a greater consistency of fill, when compared to the peaks and troughs of the commercial sheet-fed market.

We are therefore confident that we can continue to build this side of the business and capitalise on the investment in web technology that we have made over the last 12 months." He added that the company was pleased to have found a solution that has avoided the closure of the plant.

"We appreciate the positive approach taken by the GPMU and the chapel under difficult circumstances.

This undoubtedly contributed to the outcome," continued Mordt.
