The Polestar Group has held its third annual star awards, with Polestar Chantry and Polestar Chromoworks taking the top awards for most improved company and overall company, respectively.

The Polestar Group has held its third annual star awards, with Polestar Chantry and Polestar Chromoworks taking the top awards for most improved company and overall company, respectively Chris Barker, Polestar Group commercial director, was awarded the chairman's award

Polestar welcomed back Olympic gold medal winner Sally Gunnell, who attended in 2003, to help give out the awards together with comedian Lee Hurst, who had earlier entertained the guests with his unique views of Polestar, and partnerships.

Polestar Group human resources director Catherine Hearn said: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to pay tribute to employees at all levels across the group and to acknowledge the contribution they make to the continuing success of our business." She continued: "Although this is only the third awards we have held, they are proving increasingly competitive, in terms of nominations and we are also seeing a higher standard of entry, which must be a reflection on company and individual performances around the group." Healthy competition was a theme presented by the chairman Thomas Middelhoff, who attended the group's management conference held earlier in the day.

With his experience of Bertelsmann, Middelhoff was able to give an insight into the publisher's plans for the construction of a printing factory in Liverpool and the impact that would have on the UK and European printing industries.

The Polestar awards were as follows: printing technician of the year - Craig Allen, Polestar Colchester; Bindery technician of the year - Akhlag Mughal, Polestar Chantry; Sales person of the year - Rob Johnson; Retail sales managing director of the year - Jim Algar, Polestar Colchester; Best customer service person - joint winners - Amanda Footman, Polestar Colchester and Ruth Hare, Polestar Greaves; Most improved company of the year - Polestar Chantry and the long service award went to Keith Owen Richards after 48 years with the company.

Further awards included the Polestar Wheatons unsung hero of the year - Richard Tweedy; News sales best team of the year - Polestar Greaves; Management team - Greg Thomas; Young person of the year - Mark Pryce, apprentice; Polestar Greaves creative team of the year - Polestar Applied Solutions.

Polestar Chromoworks' group marketing manager Jayne Jones was also presented with an additional unsung hero award, as recognition of the work she has done in developing the Polestar brand and for the organisation of the management conference and awards events.

Over 300 people from across the group attended the event, together with a number of special guests, including representatives from six organisations - Sun Chemical, MacFarlane Transport, MAN Roland, Business Design, UPM and BPIF - who had once again sponsored specific awards.
