One million copies of the May issue of the Asda magazine were printed, with the representatives from the supermarket and its contract publisher Publicis-Blueprint overseeing the landmark occasion.

Melanie Clarke, Publicis-Blueprint's production director said: "We have watched the progress of Polestar Sheffield with interest and have been impressed by the speed and efficiency of its development.

Producing our work here and to the standard that has been achieved, just two weeks after the first press has been commissioned, is a further achievement by all those involved and we congratulate the company." Nick Shorthose, Polestar's account manager, said: "We were delighted that the first commercial work on the press was for one of our key accounts, with whom we have an excellent longstanding relationship.

Production at Polestar Sheffield, across all operations, continues to go from strength to strength." The first 3.88 metre-wide Cerutti press was commissioned on schedule at the end of last month.

The press was started up with a 3.65 metre-wide web, with 14 ribbons, making it the widest web ever printed in the UK, said Polestar.

The company's stitching, bagging and cylinder making facilities are also fully operational.

Polestar Group operations director Mike Young commented: "Our thanks go to the employees at Sheffield and all the suppliers who have worked with us to meet this target.
