Two apprentices at Polestar Petty have become the first to complete the group's modern apprenticeship programme, qualifying 18 months earlier than expected.

Nathan Doyle and Philip Metcalfe are now working as Ferag No 1 operators in the company's bindery.

Doyle (24) and Metcalfe (21) were among the first intake in January 2004.

Doyle had been employed at Polestar Petty since 2002 as a bindery assistant, whilst Metcalfe had no previous industry experience.

Presenting them with a cheque and a 'First to Finish' trophy, Darrin Stevens, Polestar Group training director, said: "All credit to their hard work and determination.

These young men have shown exactly what the apprenticeship programme can achieve.

We are delighted with their success and look forward to the contribution they will make in their new roles in the bindery." Philip Metcalfe speaks for himself and Doyle, when he said: "We have been delighted with the apprenticeship programme and are both grateful to the company, college and the BPIF for the amount of support we have been given.

It's been brilliant." Ken Bate, deputy head of British Printing Industry Federation's (BPIF) training added: "It is tremendous to see the first full achievements of the those currently pursuing their advanced apprenticeship scheme within Polestar.

Not only is it a fine testimony to their endeavours but also to the support that has been in place between Polestar, Leeds College and the BPIF.

Well done to all concerned." Chris Stott, Leeds College's key account manager, concluded: "Nathan and Philip have displayed an excellent attitude throughout their apprenticeships.

They have both produced extremely high quality work in practical lessons and were ever present on-line as part of their theoretical studies.

The consistency and quality of their work has been exemplary and it is little surprise they are already proving themselves to be highly valued members of the Petty production team.".
