It is great to see the next generation coming through, bringing fresh ideas and energy in all areas.
We look forward to welcoming this next intake to the group in September, and will continue to watch with interest the progress they make." When applying for an apprenticeship, applicants require no prior knowledge of the printing industry, of shift or shop-floor working, of health and safety or other business practices, said the company.
Aged between 16 and 21 years-old, applicants must have GCSEs in maths, English and a science, to a minimum of grade C.
Polestar is looking for those who are willing to see an improvement in themselves, an ability to be adaptable and proactive, and a positive approach to new ideas.
Working with the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) and Leeds College of Technology, the apprentices are enrolled to study by block release over a two-year period and through distance learning.
They are recruited across a mix of occupational areas.
Polestar said that ensures that the trainees not only obtain the relevant NVQs in pre-press, print, finishing or engineering, but also complete the apprenticeship programme, which comprises a level three NVQ, key skills and technical certificate.
An induction to health and safety is also included.
Although completion of the programme is scheduled to take three years, all of the first intake, who were recruited in January 2004, will complete their apprenticeships at least six months ahead of schedule, according to the company.
Two completed the programme 18 months early in July 2005.
A further 13 apprentices finished by April 2006, with the remaining 22 due to complete their training this month.
Eleven of the second intake, recruited in November 2004, have passed all their exams and all are on target to complete their courses by September 2007, one year ahead of schedule, added Polestar.
