Premier Is First UK Carbon Neutral Paper Merchant

The Premier Paper Group has become the first UK paper merchant to achieve the status of a carbon neutral company.

With plans to yield energy savings of 11 per cent this year and with an additional seven per cent savings already identified Premier Paper has completed a full analysis of its carbon emissions and has begun its cost reduction programme.

In addition, as part of Premier Paper's commitment, the company will be working with The Carbon Neutral Company to support a number of independently assessed carbon offset programmes that all meet strictly assessed criteria, added the company.

Paddy Byrne, corporate and responsibility manager for Premier Paper, said: "Through our shared ownership of distribution company GM2, we have already contributed to a reduction of 1,165 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to 136,000 gallons of diesel.

We have also reducing the miles travelled by 1,238,400 on our congested UK roads during 2007.

We also have our first electric truck on order." He explained: "As well as internally reducing our own carbon emissions, we are also working with suppliers to develop carbon neutral grades.

This is a continuing process and it demonstrates Premier's commitment to the environment and our determination to keep environmental issues at the forefront of our business strategy."
