New start-up franchise, Prontaprint York, based in Clifton Moor York (UK), has won a company award for being 'new franchise of the year 2006'.

Prontaprint York is one of 174 franchises associated with the Prontaprint network across the UK.

It is a business to business printing company, which offers its clients, including national retailers, solicitors and hoteliers, digital print, personalised mailings, large format banners and even specialised canvas prints.

The franchise, which has now been running for 12 months was set-up by Peter McFarlane.

He was originally a sales manager for the pharmaceutical company Pfizer but after 13 years of selling medicines he decided he wanted a change of career and needed to be his own boss.

McFarlane examined several business markets but finally decided to start up his own printing company and target the business to business market.

He bought the York franchise of Prontaprint in 2005 and set about hiring a centre manager and a designer.

Prontaprint said that after impressive six month sales figures, McFarlane decided he wanted to expand his business in to new markets and chose to purchase a Hewlett Packard Indigo digital press, worth over a GBP0.25m.

The new machine uses seven colour process to offer a greater range of colours.

It can print 4,000 full colour images an hour, each one of which can be individually personalised, a service suitable for direct mailing campaigns.

Prontaprint's Indigo 3050 is the first printer of its kind in the York district and the first within the Prontaprint and Kall Kwik Network.

McFarlane commented: "To win this award was truly fantastic news for me and my staff.

It is a reflection of the fresh approach we have brought to the print industry.

We have focused on adding customer value through improved service and design.

The purchase of the Indigo will now take us to the next level." He added: "We are the first franchise in the whole of Prontaprint to get one, so as you can imagine the company is very proud of our new operation and I am sure the company will be watching us closely.

The machine is truly staggering as it can print on practically anything and it has really changed the way in which we operate.

Every single sheet or mailing can now be entirely unique and this is something our competitors just don't offer.".
