Control Systems For Extra Large Format Presses

A Q.I. Press Controls product story
Edited by the Printingtalk editorial team Jun 20, 2008

The largest printer in Canada and the sixth-largest in North America, Transcontinental, has ordered Q I Press Controls' closed loop control system for its MAN Colorman XXL presses.

Q I Press Controls' systems will be installed at Transcontinental's plants in San Francisco (USA) and Anjou (Canada).

The latter site has two MAN Colorman XXL press lines, each with four towers and each in a nine-cylinder satellite configuration.

One press has two folders and the other just one.

The presses are also equipped with UV dryers on the first tower.

Q I Press Controls said that its equipment will enable the Colorman presses to run high quality semi-commercial work for Transcontinental, which is said to be the country's leading publisher of consumer magazines and French-language educational resources.

The company is also claimed to be the second-largest community newspaper publisher.

The press will be equipped by Q I Press Controls with six ergonomic touch screens, 16 IDS markless closed loop colour control scanners and 12 of the new MRC scanners, which were launched at Drupa 2008, to provide cut-off and side lay control running with one set of micro marks.

It is said that the system will ensure that all information is continually collected from the systems and sent to the IQM quality information system, which is also part of the contract.

IQM is described as a web-based quality reporting system, which is accessible on a multi-site basis.

Q I Press Controls said that its systems are fully-integrated with the PECOM, which results in a hands-off operation, started as soon as a job is loaded with all scanners then going in to auto mode and the operator will only need to start the press.

Transcontinental's San Francisco operation has three press lines, all MAN Colorman XXL's, each with three towers in four-high configuration and each press has three folders.

The presses can also run semi-commercial jobs by using hot air dryers for heatset on the first tower of each press line.

The San Francisco presses will have three touch screens, 18 IDS markless closed loop colour control scanners, 18 MRC closed loop colour register scanners that run with the micro marks.

The systems will also be fully integrated to PECOM.
