Ricoh has claimed it has developed the world's smallest wide format printer, the Aficio 240W for applications where space is at a premium The machine's space saving ability is further enhanced by a full-frontal operational design, enabling the machine to be placed up against a wall said the company

The device also includes a tilting facility, which allows the machine to be easily moved between floors without the need to reconfigure.

As a result, many upper floor design offices, which have previously had to rely on either outsourcing their printing needs or navigating several flights of stairs to access the printer on a lower floor, are now able to bring all printing facilities in-house.

The device offers optional pre-configuration and provides boasts 600dpi printing and copying at speeds of 3.6 metres per minute claimed Ricoh.

It is CAD supported and provides image scanning with up to 256 greyscales.

Paper stocks range from A4 to A0 and the various feeding options include half rolls and paper cassettes.

Ricoh product manager Mark Griffin believes that the Aficio 240W's target market will be quick to realise the potential benefits.

"Wide format manufacturers have long neglected the needs of smaller design environments.

Some have resorted to buying a large device that over-services their needs, whilst others have had neither the space available nor the facility to get the printer into their office and have consequently relied upon the expensive option of outsourcing printing requirements.

The Aficio 240W's tiny footprint and full frontal operation coupled with its manoeuvrability, means that this need no longer be the case," he said.
