Ricoh will be dedicating up to 1,600 saplings a year to help offset carbon emissions generated by Derbyshire County Council's 1,300 Ricoh copiers and multifunctional devices.

Ricoh supplies and maintains the machines throughout the council's operations, which includes the county's schools, as well as providing systems to district and city councils and affiliated bodies.

The dedication programme meets the council's requirement for continual environmental enhancement and to help offset the carbon emissions produced through the use of its products, the manufacturer will dedicate a tree in one of five sustainable forestry locations around the UK for every 100,000 outputs produced by Derbyshire County Council on products supplied by Ricoh.

Lesley Coombes, the senior procurement officer at Derbyshire County Council said: "We're continually looking for ways to cut down on the number of printed pages we need to use by using alternative communication methods such as e-mail and the intranet.

Where it is necessary for us to use print copies we look to reduce any negative environmental impact of our paperwork as one of our major priorities is to protect and enhance the environment.

By working with Ricoh to plant trees in relation to the numbers of copies we produce we are effectively putting back what we use so that everyone benefits." More information about Ricoh's sapling dedication programme can be found on its website, where visitors will also be able to order 'The Resource-full Greener Office Guide', which contains advice on how organisations of all sizes can improve environmental performance, said the company.
