Australia's Visy Displays has installed a six-colour Scitex Vision Corjet industrial inkjet press at its facility in Reservoir, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria (Australia).

Australia's Visy Displays has installed a six-colour Scitex Vision Corjet industrial inkjet press at its facility in Reservoir, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria (Australia) The Corjet machine, which will boost Visy Displays' product offering, has already enabled the company to expand into new markets, while offering new services to existing clients

It is said to be the first digital inkjet press developed for the corrugated market.

It can print sheet sizes up to 160cm x 320cm (63" x 126") at a rate of up to 150 square metres per hour (1614 square feet) delivering up to 29 full format sheets per hour in 600dpi two-pass mode.

The printing process is completely automatic from the high-capacity automatic loader that feeds the print unit, to the dryer and the automatic unloader.

The Corjet has 3.8 litre (one gallon) ink reservoirs and so can be run with minimal supervision.

At the heart of the Corjet is the proprietary Aprion Technology including the piezoelectric print heads that can be arranged in multiple arrays and a wide range of configurations.

The result is a robust system that can deliver more than 25,000 drops per second from each of 512 nozzles on each print head.

This not only gives speed, but quality and a stability that ensures repeatability, said Scitex.

Sybil Clyne, general manager of Visy Displays said: "Our aim is to supply our customers with environmentally sound, leading edge, packaging and display solutions.

Choosing the Corjet to meet these needs was the natural choice.

Trials on our 100% recycled clay coated corrugated board proved the best fit to our existing business and, importantly, the machine uses water-based inks, which corresponds well with our environmental policies." She explained that the Corjet's ability to carry out cost effective short runs was a big draw for the company, with its automatic feed system proving to be a real benefit.

She continued: "It is perfect for point-of-purchase, packaging prototypes and print on demand where time is of the essence, it has given us the edge in the area of new product development.

The machine allows us to print targeted, personalised, promotional products for niche markets with the ability to make print changes quickly and economically." The speed and the quality of the products that the press is able to produce attracted Visy to the Corjet, and the potential to create new market opportunities, quickly became apparent.

The company had previously steered away from fast turn-around, short run work but the Corjet has opened new doors for Visy.

Now, it is producing an increasing number of bright, colourful merchandisers for in-store promotions of FMCG products for well known national and international brands.

Visy also produces header cards and some single sheet signage.

"We manufacture corrugated board here at the plant and it's very satisfying and efficient to be able to make the board and print it at the same site," commented Clyne.

Clay-coated corrugated board is a speciality of Visy's production and the stock is well suited to POP displays because of the high definition and vibrancy of the colours that can be produced.

Visy Displays installed a flatbed CAD-operated digital die-cutter alongside the Corjet, so displays and packaging can be quickly scored and die-cut, ready for assembly.

The combination enables fast and economical production of concept mock-ups of displays and packaging.

The system was helping the sales and marketing effort of the company not only for its own sales team but also its clients.

"There is a cross over point from digital to conventional production but it varies greatly from job to job depending on the product, layout and process and of course there is the elimination of film and plate costs.

We've been delighted with the overall performance of the Corjet.

Printing at 600dpi is finer than screen printing.

The all-digital workflow helps eliminate errors and the finish is very good," Sybil Clyne added.

The machine's extra cyan-blue and extra yellow in the inkset made a big difference in achieving bright yellows and accurate blues.

Visy Displays is a division of Visy Specialities, which was established in 1984 to better serve customers requiring smaller carton quantities.

Since then the company has grown to cater for customers who need a wide range of value added products, across a variety of industries.

Visy Specialities employs 550 people to cater to the needs of the food and drink, hospitality, retail and automotive sectors, amongst others.

This division is in turn, part of the privately owned Visy Industries, founded in 1948 and now claimed to be one of the worlds largest packaging and papermaking companies, employing 8,000 people worldwide at its 130 packaging, papermaking and recycling plants.
