One hundred and fifty international visitors to the Schiavi Open House in Piacenza (Italy) saw the Italian manufacturer's new EF 4060 flexo press for flexible materials.

One hundred and fifty international visitors to the Schiavi Open House in Piacenza (Italy) saw the Italian manufacturer's new EF 4060 flexo press for flexible materials The design of the press is said to be completely new and has been developed to improve the ergonomics of the press operation for make-ready, job change-overs, cleaning and maintenance, said Schiavi

The EF 4060 press demonstrated at the open house, with a 1,450mm web width and 370mm - 860mm repeat range, incorporated a number of features, new developments and technological highlights, added the company.

Equipped with pneumatic self-adapting doctor blades, carbon fibre mandrels for plates and anilox rolls, as well as automatic unwind and re-wind units, the press also features the latest press management system jointly developed by Schiavi and Registron Integrated.

It also has an insetting function for in register 8+8 printing or special application coatings, and automatic washing, together with the new KCR 300 system, which was also premiered at the open house event.

The KCR 300 automatic impression setting system incorporates the latest registration integrated technology and it is instrumental in minimising the waste of material and unproductive time at the start of every new job, said Schiavi.

The KCR 300's linear camera reads the printed image across the whole web width and automatically adjusts the position of each plate cylinder and anilox roller to achieve the most accurate printing impression setting.

The system is fully automatic and avoids the possibility of operator errors at start up.

One of the distinctive features of the KCR 300 is its flexibility and the fact that it can be used in conjunction with any type of web inspection system installed on the press, added the company.

The EF 4060 demonstration at the open house started with a job printed on 35u white BOPP film at a speed of 400 metres per minute with the automatic reel splicing on both rewind and unwind performed at 350 metres per minute.

The company said that with the machine printing at high speed the noise level around the press was low, owing to the new insulation system on the upper bridge, where the main tunnel, the ventilation system and the electrical cabinets are located.

The design of the drying system is said to provide efficient and consistent air flow along the whole web length, both in the overhead tunnel and the inter-colour dryers.

The integrated dryer air recirculation system creates a reduction in press operating costs and the overall system increases the efficiency of evaporation at any speed, allowing for minimal solvent retention on the printed substrate, it is claimed.

The operations for the press-make ready of the second job, an 11-colour production-type subject, were carried out very quickly.

The operator changed the plate and anilox sleeve using the sleeve handling system.

The two pivotal structures, in their latest version with optimised design and ergonomics, further simplify and speed up the replacement of the sleeves by the operator.

The second, 11-colour job was specifically created to show visitors another feature, the EF 4060 was equipped with the insetting.

That feature is based on the latest registration integrated S 5100 scanning head technology and it is used for in-register special applications, such as additional colour printing or coating of cold seal, lacquer or varnishes, for instance.

During the open house demonstration, the insetting was used for printing eight additional colours on a three-colour pre-printed web.

The job was also printed at a speed of 400 metres per minute, with a flying splice on the rewinder.

Shown in action as the last part of the EF 4060 demonstration was another Schiavi productivity-enhancing press ancillary, the automatic washing system, said the company.

There was a demonstration of the Titan SR8 twin-shaft cantilever slitter rewinder, of which more than 100 machines have been sold worldwide since its introduction at Drupa in 2004.

The SR8 featured automatic knife and laser core positioning systems, an automatic slit reel stripping and unloading system and running at claimed speeds up to 600 metres per minute.

The Titan SR8 processed the packaging material specially printed for the event on the EF4060 electronic flexo press, with four rewind packages and edge trim extraction system.

The Titan SR8 also featured a dual AC motor driven free standing unwind, a splice table and static elimination system.

The Titan automatic knife positioning system is said to complete setting of 20 male and female knives in 90 seconds.
