Sun Chemical Corporation is building on its Onyx specialist service for the narrow web sector in the UK by providing a global product line of inks and coatings under the new brand name Solaris.

The Solaris range, formulated to meet the needs of narrow web printers worldwide was launched at Label Expo Americas 2004.

"The creation of Solaris signals Sun Chemical's commitment to the narrow web market.

Through Solaris, we are creating a focussed group that links all the diverse products required in this sector and will provide all product information under one umbrella to our customers in Europe, the Americas and other locations.

In the UK, existing customers will find the Solaris brand recognisable as Onyx" said Tom Kelly, UK marketing manager for narrow web at Sun Chemical.

The look of the product and the concept remained but the company needed a name that it could truly globalise remarked Kelly.

Jeff Hulston, managing director of the UK narrow web division added: "Solaris is a name our companies can now freely adopt across regional borders with the aim of ensuring the highest quality products and service are available worldwide." Onyx and Sun Chemical narrow web was first launched in 2003 and established as a separate operating division with facilities at Liverpool, South Normanton and East Kilbride.

The target was the 450 UK printers in a growing sector with an annual sales value of some £25m.

The company said that the first year of operation had been highly successful and now Sun Chemical sees similar growth and opportunity in many other countries amongst producers of pressure sensitive labels for the food and beverage industry and also those serving the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and personal care sectors.
