25% Extra Coding And Marking Output And Less Waste

Datalase has reported that its customers have gained significant benefits from replacing the company's thermal transfer and laser printing systems with the Pakmark coding and marking system.

The patent-pending Datalase process is claimed to achieve a production output increase of over 25 per cent, as well as reducing waste product by a 90 per cent, whilst requiring almost no maintenance.

The result is said to enable faster product availability at the minimum cost possible when compared to conventional methods of printing.

Traditional printing systems, such as thermal transfer and laser printing are expensive to use and maintain, as they are labour intensive, requiring maintenance at frequent intervals and using expensive consumables, said Datalase.

In addition, they produce low quality, incomplete images, resulting in excessive waste of finished product.

Datalase's Packmark is used for applying on-demand variable information to primary packaging materials.

Packaging is coated with the Datalase ink, which is then activated by a very low power CO2 laser causing a positive image to be formed that is stable and tamperproof.

In contrast to conventional printing systems, Packmark is claimed to print very high quality, reproducible images and removes the need for costly consumables on the production line.

According to Datalase, Packmark users report significant cost reductions and increased productivity compared to their old printing methods.

Qiagen, a provider of sample and assay technologies and products for the life science and diagnostic market, has replaced its old thermal transfer and laser printing systems with Packmark.

The Datalase process was chosen as a viable system for applying variable information, such as lot codes, date of manufacture, expiry dates and storage details directly on to the packaging of Qiagen's cleanroom-produced blister packs.

Rene Hess, the director of the Qiagen assembly plant, commented: "We have been using Packmark with three lasers for over six months with no operational, production or maintenance issues.

All these benefits translate in to a production output increase of over 25 per cent.

The Packmark process is specifically adapted to our requirements to ensure optimal image quality at the lowest possible cost.

The high efficiency of the chemistry enables fast production run times and ensures that our packaging can now feature high grade data.

The resulting savings can be invested in to research and development of new products and can be used to further increase our production capabilities.".
