The publisher of music magazine Rolling Stone, Wenner Media, has upgraded its editorial system with Softcare's K4 Publishing System to manage its design and editorial workflows.
Rolling Stone, Us Weekly and Men's Journal are now using the K4 system from Softcare, which is said to provide Wenner Media with a system where editors and graphic designers can work on their articles and layouts at the same time Rolling Stone also uses K4 for re-purposing print content for its website

New Software Simplifies Editorial Tasks
At this year's Ifra Expo in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) from October 9-12, Softcare will introduce version 5.7 of the Softcare K4 editorial system based on Adobe InDesign.
For each Wenner Media title, Softcare said that it only took a few issues to fully complete the switch from Quark to Adobe InDesign and InCopy and K4.
Wenner Media's 180-seat K4 system is the latest installation from Managing Editor, the K4 distributor in the Americas.
With a circulation of 1.8 million, Us Weekly is the largest Wenner Media title and it was the first to operate K4.
The magazine's staff was able to make a complete transition to the K4 system after just two issues, said Softcare.
Paul Leung, the system administrator at Wenner Media, said: "We were able to roll out all three titles in an extremely quick time.
We've already seen K4's potential for accelerating production and we're excited to see what else we can do with it in the future." For example, Rolling Stone is planning to use K4's K4 XML Exporter add-on module to re-purpose magazine content for use on its website.
The magazine's staff is also considering using K4 to standardise its electronic content in a format that would allow it to be re-purposed in other ways, such as for release on DVDs, along with special editions, or through any other multimedia channel.
Softcare added that during the production of one issue Men's Journal, the transition process to K4 was completed earlier than expected.
Daniel Schrier, MEI's editorial systems project manager, explained: "Going through the transition was a bit of a refresher for the Men's Journal staff, so they just ran with it." K4 integrator DPCI in New York also provided InCopy and InDesign training and support for Wenner Media.
According to Softcare, K4 has been gaining ground in the USA's media market.
Last December the publishers Congressional Quarterly and Advanstar Communications, as well as the lifestyle magazine Parade with a circulation of 32 million copies also upgraded to K4.
