Omega 73 open gear grease from Sovereign Lubricants and Seals has found a niche in the printing industry, said the company.

Omega 73 open gear grease from Sovereign Lubricants and Seals has found a niche in the printing industry, said the company It is used on open gears in printing machines, whether it is a label printer or a 12-colour sheet fed printer and most of the machines have open gears that are exposed to the atmosphere

According to Sovereign, Omega 73 is not to be confused with the greasing system for closed bearings and cam followers, which usually comprise a lubricant reservoir within the machine that dispenses grease via a central lube system.

The company's Omega 77 is said to be for this area.

Drying out of the metal surface occurs on open gears and due to the arduous duty that a typical printing press undergoes with no time allowed for maintenance intervals, correct use of a quality lubricant in this area is essential, added the company.

Often this area is neglected because cheap greases 'fling off' and splash on to the printing paper.

Omega 73, when applied correctly, is claimed to adhere to the gears and provide effective lubrication for this important area.

The grease is used to coat the gears and does not fling off like cheaper greases, claimed Sovereign.

Omega 73 adheres to the surface of the gears, whilst ordinary greases develop in to collective deposits that harden and cause frictional drag and excessive energy consumption.

Omerga 73 is said to remain in position and keeps the system and the gears in silent mesh.

It provides a hydro-dynamic liquid wedge between gear wear areas and this bed of micronised bearings provide minimum friction for intermeshing teeth and shafts.

Sovereign said that ordinary lubricant deposits build up and rapidly develop in to hard spots that score, gel, gall and claw metal surfaces.

They also thin down and squeeze out even under slight temperature increases, whilst Omega 73 is also said to retain its texture and stays in position, acting also as a dust preventative.

Dust normally causes wear in locations where just such conditions prevail.

Any printer with open gears on his printing machines can contact Sovereign Lubricants and Seals for a free lubricant check up, added the company.

David Brook the sales director at Sovereign said he is confident that any printer who is not already using Omega lubricants can benefit from increased production.
