Graphic, Packaging Boards Win Forest Certification

Finnish-based packaging and graphic board producer Stromsdal has been certified for the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) schemes.

As a result, Stromsdal has achieved Chain of Custody (CoC) for all its fibre sourcing at its Juankoski mill.

According to the company, together with the mill's earlier investment in a bio fuel power plant, the certifications will ensure that Stromsdal's customers who use the mill's off-line coated graphical and packaging boards, as well as its fully-compostable TECTA barrier boards for food packaging, can help to minimise their carbon footprint.

Stromsdal said that it first became involved in the forest industry a century ago, when its first groundwood pulp mill was commissioned in 1907.

Since then, the Stromsdal mill has been committed to environmental issues in and around its location in eastern central Finland.

The main wood species used for the mechanical pulp production at the mill is Northern European spruce, a species which is only sourced from the local province, within a radius of some 100km from the mill at Juankoski.

PEFC and FSC promote sustainable forestry and certify that the wood used at the mill originates from certified and sustainable managed sources.

Less than 10 per cent of the world's forests are currently certified, which means that ensuring a certified supply of fibre for large-scale industrial use cannot be taken for granted, said the company.
