Thanet Press has won the approval of the Forest Stewardship Council - an international organisation dedicated to combating deforestation and promoting responsible management of the world's forests.

The Margate (UK) print company has won an FSC accreditation, assuring all its customers that paper used at the plant comes from well-managed woodland and that there is a certified chain of custody that tracks the timber from the forest to the final user.

David Hurley, managing director of Thanet Press, said: "Some 10,000 wood-based products in garden centres and DIY stores already carry the FSC logo but we are one of the first printers in the UK to bring the standard to the printing industry.

Everybody uses paper but we all realise that the timber it's made from must be harvested in a responsible and sustainable way.

The FSC ensures that a forest is well-managed, from the protection of indigenous people's rights to the methods of felling trees." The Forest Stewardship Council is active in 28 countries and its work is endorsed by Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and The Woodland Trust.

Thanet Press has already achieved ISO 9001 (quality and management standards), ISO 14001 (environmental standards) and ISO 18001 (health and safety).

David Hurley added: "Customers such as government agencies, local authorities and educational institutions strive for the highest standards of governance, health and safety and sustainability in all their dealings.

Meeting and exceeding those standards is good for business, good for our staff and good for the environment.".
