In stressing its position on environmental issues, UK printer Thanet Press is promoting some vital statistics about paper and its origins.

The company's managing director, David Hurley, emphasised some important facts to try to create heightened awareness of the need for companies to bear more corporate social responsibility.

He said: "It takes two cords of wood to make one ton of a typical paper, where one cord equals 128 cubic feet.

There are many variables but on average, US conservation pressure group Conservatree, has calculated that one ton of uncoated virgin, or non-recycled printing and office paper uses 24 trees.

Elsewhere, a ream of typical office paper (500 sheets) uses about six per cent of a tree.
