TSO is to publish a new training programme aimed at rescue professionals and anyone with a responsibility for water safety, including teachers and those working in activity centres.

'Water Awareness' is a DVD and CD-ROM training resource based on current industry best practice guidance in the UK.

The DVD is presented by Sky News television reporter Hazel Westwood and will cover a range of safety issues, including hazard recognition, control measures, the effects of cold, water pollution and self-protection techniques.

It has been produced by Lane Jefferies and Associates, working in conjunction with fire and rescue services and using information from sources as varied as the police, HM Coastguard and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

The accompanying CD-ROM contains a glossary, training notes, a question bank and a cross-mapping exercise for fire-fighter role maps, showing how the programme supports development.

At the end of each section, learners can assess their progress.

Water Awareness will support the Fire Service Manual, 'Working on, in or near water' level one training requirements currently used across fire and rescue services in England and Wales.

David Lane of Lane Jefferies and Associates said: "We have produced something aimed at everyone who works in or close to water.

The style is entertaining as well as informative and, we hope, will help reduce the number of people who are tragically killed through insufficient awareness of the risks associated with water." He added: "We were very pleased to accept the international videofuego 2005 special award, as this recognised our achievement of producing a unique potentially lifesaving resource for first responders.".
