The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has accredited Tall Security Print as one of the first suppliers eligible to produce cheques for the Nigerian banking sector.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has accredited Tall Security Print as one of the first suppliers eligible to produce cheques for the Nigerian banking sector.

The accreditation builds on the company's growing export business and its sees it as a key element in its plans to develop overseas trade.

"This accreditation comes as the Nigerian government overhauls its whole banking system in a bid to eliminate fraud," explained Martin Ruda, managing director of the Tall Group, which includes Tall Security Print and Checkprint.

He added: "A delegation from the CBN visited our premises before Christmas to meet staff, find out more about our range of services and above all check the quality of our systems and our work.

They were impressed by our commitment to excellent customer service and were clearly satisfied that we could meet the new Nigerian cheque standards.

We are a growing, innovative company and this is another area for business development." The Nigerian government and the CBN committed to overhaul the national banking system in a bid to strengthen the sector.

The country had around 90 different banks with varying regulations and this has now been reduced to 25 stronger institutions, said Tall.

The CBN has also introduced an APACS style cheque specification and cheque printers' accreditation scheme.

This standardises the layout of Nigerian cheques and ensures that they are image compliant.

The move will also weed out printers who are unable to meet the CBN's requirements.

The Tall Group has developed electronic document distribution systems and secure print systems as its UK customers make the move from paper to electronic payment systems.

It hopes, however, that its export activity will enable it to take advantage of banking developments overseas.

It appointed Cas Amato as its export sales manager last year and he is currently visiting various countries to build on existing contacts.

Late last year he was instrumental in helping Tall's Runcorn operation land an export award from the Halton Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise.
