Paper Company Steps Up Environmental Efforts
Tullis Russell is stepping up its environmental efforts with the appointment of Dr Christine Wood as the company's corporate social responsibility manager.
The company said that the creation of the new management position follows the company's work in producing environmental products, such as its cartonboard market materials that have FSC certification, as we4ll as its Trucard and New Gemini brands.
Tullis Russell added that it also supplies FSC certified brands, such as Advocate to the business communications sector with other products from its range, such as Mellotex and Naturalis, set to follow suit later this year.
In addition, the company has extended its products to include 50 per cent post-consumer FSC certified recycled options within the Naturalis, Trucard and New Gemini ranges.
The company said that it continues to work with an energy company on a potential biomass green energy plant, which would utilise local supplies of waste wood normally destined for landfill.
It is claimed that the facility would not only build on the company's environmental credentials but it would also contribute to Scotland's overall renewable energy targets, whilst protecting the jobs of the 530 employee shareholders working at the factory in Scotland.
As an employee-owned company in Fife, Tullis Russell said that it takes its wider social responsibilities seriously.
The charitable Russell Trust, set up in honour of Patrick Russell, who died in the Second World War, still invests its dividends each year in educational, environmental and charitable causes locally and nationally.
Speaking of her new role, Christine Wood commented: "Having worked for Tullis Russell for 19 years, most of that time in environmental management, this is a hugely exciting challenge for me as the company seeks to build a leadership position on sustainability in the broadest of senses.
Ensuring we drive down carbon emissions, make efficient use of resources and continue to minimise the environmental impact of raw material procurement and site operations will reflect our core value that our business must operate in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner.".
