Technotrans to supply KBA with spray dampening systems, dampening solution preparation units and integrated ink supply systems for nine Commander satellite-type rotary presses and two Comet presses

Technotrans is to supply KBA with spray dampening systems, dampening solution preparation units and integrated ink supply systems for nine Commander satellite-type rotary presses and two Comet rotary presses with eight towers The order for the Italian newspaper group Rizzoli Corriere della Sera (RCS)has a total value of around 2.3 million Euros

After consultation with several other manufacturers, RCS decided on the Technotrans microspray.line spray dampening systems and central dampening solution preparation units in an integrated system.

With the 11 rotary presses, which will be installed by the end of 2004 or the start of 2005, KBA believes it will assume a leading position in Italian newspaper offset printing investments.

Four KBA Commanders will be delivered to Pessano near Milan, two presses will be installed in Rome and Padua, and one press will go to Bari.

The Comet presses are intended for the two RCS production sites in Catania and Genoa.

With a total of 5,400 employees and a turnover of more than two billion Euros in 2002, the RCS media group is one of the biggest printing companies in Italy and publishes, among other titles, the daily newspaper 'Corriere della Sera' that has the highest nation-wide circulation.

The current daily print run is 900,000 copies reaching more than 2.8 million readers.

The group's Italian sports newspaper 'Gazzetta dello Sport' - the biggest in the country - sells more than 500,000 daily copies and is read by more than 3.2 million people.

In Spain, RCS holds a majority of shares of the second largest national newspaper 'El Mundo'.

Apart from dominating the newspaper business, RCS is also actively involved in other business segments, such as magazines, books and new media.

The Technotrans spray dampening units installed in the new KBA presses for RCS have special lamella valve technology combined with a stainless steel flat spray nozzle that allows a consistent and finely adjustable distribution of the dampening solution and thus an optimum ink-water-balance.

The result is a precisely defined width distribution with small tolerances.

The design of the spray dampening unit and the individual control of the lamella valves meets the requirements of rotary printing presses printing on paper webs with variable widths.

The stainless steel flat spray nozzles make the microspray.line system highly stable in spite of pressure fluctuations, dirt and temperature changes.

The robust stainless steel design of the system is corrosion-resistant and designed for the service life of the press.

The modular design of the spray bar allows easy and user-friendly handling as well as quick checking and maintenance, said KBA.

The ink supply system comprises ink valves, ink filling tubes with adjustable ink outlets, and ultrasonic sensors for safe monitoring of the ink level in the duct.

Time-pulse generators made by Technotrans make it possible to control the entire system centrally from the press control station.

It also has integrated monitors and self-closing ink valves and provides ink to a total of 96 divided ink ducts on the two Comet presses and 216 individual ducts on the nine Commander presses.

KBA and Technotrans will install the equipment together at RCS.

Other examples of joint projects between the companies include recent installations at Tamedia AG, Zurich (Switzerland), Espace Media Groupe, Berne (Switzerland) and The Courier Journal, (Kentucky, USA).

In Switzerland, more than 170 spray dampening units made by Technotrans will be used on a new KBA Commander 6/2.

In Kentucky, a Colora-class large-scale installation will be equipped with a total of 129 spray dampening units.
