Paper company UPM's new web site is said to take users on a walk through the forest whilst they sit in front of their computers.

UPM said that website the visitor can explore the forest with their mouse to see modern forestry in action, whilst seeing and feeling that the forest is full of life.

However, the site is not only for watching, added UPM, as the user can also listen and relax to the birds singing and the rippling brook.

Robert Taylor, customer communications manager for environmental forestry affairs at UPM, said: "It's not possible to take everyone to the forest to see how UPM operates, or to show all the wildlife living there, so we decided to take the forest to them.

Using different techniques we try to capture the forest spirit and create a real forest experience for the visitor." On visiting the website users will meet the different people who work in the forest or enjoy it for recreation.

The visitor can also watch as a trained operator precisely cuts and processes the tree or berry pickers gathering their winter vitamins.

There are also bird's eye views to see the constantly evolving forest and from a bird tower cranes doing their spring mating dance can be watched, added the company.

Jaakko Sarantola, senior vice president for forestry and wood sourcing at UPM, said: "Through a Finnish example, the website shows how UPM operates in its forests today.".
