UPM is seeking to improve the competitiveness of its Tervasaari paper mill's label and packaging paper production even though the site will stop producing brown sack paper and packaging paper today.

The company's general manager, Eero Kuokkanen, said that the Tervasaari mill would respond to the changes by improving the competitiveness of label and packaging paper The steps UPM has already taken renewed one Line last year and there will be investment to improve the quality and efficiency of another line this year

He added: "In particular, the new pulp bleaching line, which will start operation in September, will allow us to increase the use of our own pulp in label and packing paper production." Some personnel from the 80 employed on the line that closes today will transfer to other departments at the paper mill, whilst the rest will benefit from the company's pension scheme.

UPM's Tervasaari mill is said by the company to be the world's leading label release paper producer.

Two paper machines produce label base paper with the combined annual capacity of 250,000 tonnes.

In addition, another machine produces envelope and bag papers, as well as special papers for technical applications, with an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes.

Ninety per cent of production at Tervasaari Mill, where there are 700 employees, is exported.
