Carbon Footprint Data For Paper Now Available

UPM has launched carbon footprint calculations for its paper products to assist its customers to estimate their own carbon footprints.

The company said that carbon footprint calculations are available for the customers as part of the Paper Profile.

According to UPM, the basis for its carbon footprint calculations are the 10 elements of the Carbon Footprint Framework for Paper and Board Products developed by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI).

The data used in UPM's calculations are based on annual averages of specific paper machine lines.

The figures refer to fossil CO2 emissions, which are the most important greenhouse gas emissions of paper industry, added the company.

CEPI's Carbon Footprint Framework for Paper and Board Products was launched in 2007.

The elements included in the framework feature such details as carbon sequestration in forests, carbon in forest products and greenhouse gas emissions from forest product manufacturing facilities.

In addition, the framework also highlights greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing fibre, as well as those associated with producing other raw and similar emissions materials and fuels associated with purchased electricity, steam and heat.

Other factors that are accounted for include transport-related greenhouse gas emissions, as well as those associated with product use, product end-of-life and avoided emissions.

Paivi Rissanen, UPM's environmental manager, explained: "We want to provide our customers with data in a consistent form to assist customers in estimating the impacts they each have on the environment as accurately as possible." She added: "The Paper Profile includes essential information on different environmental parameters, as well as product composition.

The carbon footprint calculation attached to it further widens the scope of the document.".
