Pumps in the same range were used at the company's former site and performed so well that the new plant also features them.

The originals were installed two and half years ago, were in continuous operation and remained maintenance free.

The pumps perform a variety of dosing and bulk transfer duties and are equally suited to handling the water-based inks and flammable solvents used at the plant, since they feature a seal-less, leak-proof design and present no electrical hazard.

The VA25, 40 and 50 models share a common, low leakage air valve that requires no lubrication, comprises just nine parts and can be serviced without disconnecting the pump.

Other makes of air diaphragm pump typically use air valves that are specific to one pump size, feature many more parts and require more regular servicing, claimed the manufacturers, Verda of Leeds.

By standardising on these pumps, Akzo are said to benefit from lower life cycle costs.
