The Watkiss Vario Bookmaker has been certified by Océ Printing Systems for use online to its Varioprint 5000 family printers.

The Watkiss Vario Bookmaker has been certified by Océ Printing Systems for use online to its Varioprint 5000 family printers.

Already compatible with most other Océ cut-sheet printers, the Vario Bookmaker is a finishing system for digital print applications that links online to the printer, allowing printing and booklet making in one simple operation - converting digital print in to finished booklets.

The Bookmaker is claimed to offer the flexibility to finish the output from the entire print room since it can be easily switched between on-line or off-line operation.

Used online, it accepts sheets from the printer, adds additional covers if required and then passes them through an online booklet-maker.

Used offline, it can be used as a booklet-maker for electronically-collated digitally printed work, or it can be used as a conventional collator and booklet-maker for batch printed work.

Additional sheets, printed from another source, are inserted automatically.

They may be covers or extra insert sheets, including coated or laminated heavy cover stocks that have been printed separately on an offset press or another digital printing device.

The Bookmaker can have up to eight suction feeders, which means that the system can also be used offline as a conventional collator and booklet maker.

That increases the flexibility and utilisation of the equipment, especially as many digital print environments also have offset or other batch-printing facilities.

With the Bookmaker online, the printer still operates at its normal production speed.

A4 sheets can still be printed in landscape orientation in order to maximise the printer speed - the Bookmaker will automatically rotate the sheet into the correct orientation prior to booklet making claimed Watkiss.

The Bookmaker system can also include the Watkiss Spinemaster, which produces Squareback books by post-processing stitched or stapled booklets to give them the professional flat appearance of a perfect bound book, but with the security of a stitched spine.

It enhances the overall quality of the finished booklet said the company.

Watkiss offers five different link-bridges for the Bookmaker for connection to a range of printers.

It is currently compatible with Océ cut-sheet printers including Océ 31x5E, 84x5, Varioprint 2045-65 and 2050-70 families, Varioprint 2090, 2105, 2110, 3070 and 3090.
